Beyond defibrillation and CPR

A proud legacy of firsts is an accurate summary of the progressions made by the Swedish medical technology developer Jolife. Jolife was first to successfully launch a mechanical chest compression device for treatment of sudden cardiac arrest patients, and is since two years part of another pioneering company in emergency medical care; the US based Physio-Control. Physio-Control developed and launched the first external defibrillators in the late 1950s and is the global market leader in pre-hospital emergency care.

For over ten years, the founders of Jolife worked on the development of a unique solution to improve the outcome for sudden cardiac arrest patients. The result, an innovative system called the LUCAS Chest Compression System, is a mechanical device that helps rescuers to quickly and effectively perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to secure life-sustaining blood circulation in patients suffering an acute cardiac arrest.
After developing and marketing the first model of the LUCAS system mainly in Northern Europe, Jolife went on to successfully launch the second generation LUCAS 2. Through Physio-Control, Jolife was able to reach the global markets and establish solid ground for further growth. Today the US and Japanese markets are the largest growth markets, followed by Europe.

Many lives can be saved
The success story continues. The LUCAS system takes the treatment of acute medical events beyond defibrillation and CPR. Erik von Schenck, former CEO of Jolife and now Vice President of CPR Products at Physio-Control, explains that the device can also be used to perform prolonged CPR and maintain the patient’s blood circulation until the underlying cause can be treated at the hospital.
Today there are an increasing number of reports of patients that have been successfully saved by prolonged CPR, sometimes after several hours of CPR using the LUCAS system. The cause of the cardiac arrest has then been dealt with successfully and the patient is living a much appreciated and healthy life today.
“When effective CPR is given, many lives can be saved with good neurological outcome despite long resuscitations. The key question is really how we, now using modern technology, can further improve survival of cardiac arrest patients. Hands-free CPR, using the LUCAS system creates a new platform for resuscitation, allowing for safe transportation and effective prolonged CPR, all which is one part of the answer”.

LUCAS is safe and effective
The LUCAS system is now distributed in over 50 countries around the world. Mechanical CPR is still a relatively young technology that has yet to be accepted in many parts of the world, where manual chest compressions form the standard of care.
After a landmark study of the LUCAS system, involving cardiac arrest patients in Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK, it has been confirmed that LUCAS is safe and effective and that the LUCAS device is reliable and easy to use. Most importantly, the survivors had very good neurological outcomes.
