Medicon Valley – a stepping stone to life science in the Nordics

This is the first time that Europe’s biggest biotech conference will be in Scandinavia, and I my - admittedly very subjective - view EBD group couldn´t have chosen a more suitable location than Copenhagen and the Danish-Swedish Medicon Valley region. By doing so, they have chosen not only the leading life science cluster of the Nordic countries, but also the most suitable stepping stone to life science in the Nordics as such.

Bella Center, the conference venue, is located just a few kilometers from the Øresunds bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden and similarly close to Copenhagen Airport connecting the Medicon Valley to the rest of the world. At BioEurope 2018 international guests will find themselves in the center of a leading bi-national life science cluster covering eastern Denmark and southern Sweden.

At Medicon Valley Alliance we consider BIO Europe a unique opportunity to showcase the size and quality of our life science cluster with global pharmaceutical companies like Ferring, LEO Pharma, Lundbeck and Novo Nordisk headquartered in the region, and several innovative biotech companies like Genmab, , ALK-Abello and Alligator Bioscience pointing to not only a glorious past, but also a promising future for the region. We also hope to be able to highlight the quality of the region´s nine universities with life science research, the substantial number of successful medical technology companies like Coloplast and Baxter, and – last but not least - the regions science parks serving as incubators for new entrepreneurial companies as well as starting points for foreign companies wishing to establish a foothold in the region.

The companies, of which some have a 100-year track-record with industry-academia partnerships, have played a crucial role in developing the regions current scientific strongholds within for instance in CNS, dermatology, diabetes, fertility and immune-oncology. With world-leading research facilities such as, The European Spallation Source (ESS) currently under construction and the Swedish national MAX IV Laboratory, inaugurated in 2016, the potential for academia-industry partnerships, Danish-Swedish collaboration AND – finally – world class international science collaboration is now stronger than ever

We have now been given a window of opportunity to communicate these opportunities to the world. I hope you will join me and help making Medicon Valley an exciting and rewarding place to visit, explore and do business for all BIO Europe participants.
