Saft – partner in securing reliable Energy Storage Systems

Oskarshamn, a town in the south-eastern part of Sweden, is a major player amongst Europe’s prime developers within the field of industrial NiCd batteries for energy and renewable sources. The Saft Group develops and manufactures high technology batteries for industrial, space and defense applications, and is a world-leading supplier of client-specific applications within this field.

The Saft Group maintains operations in 19 countries and has some 4000 employees worldwide, where Saft AB in Oskarshamn is one of the biggest operations within the Industrial Battery Group (IBG) division. The Saft Group has an expansive R & D department; a large part of the annual turnover is dedicated to the development of new technologies – always aiming to improve the performance and life-span of the company’s product portfolio.
“Our applications are often used in critical environments; they are robust and can stand extreme external pressure. Our batteries are primarily used as backup applications where reliable access to power is of utmost importance”, Mari Kadowaki, Managing Director of Saft AB, explains.

In-house developed Energy Storage Systems
The core ambition of Saft is to provide a reliable battery backup solution in critical environments. The Group has also developed an interest in sustainable solutions, working closely with the developers of renewable energy solutions.
One of the characteristics of renewables is that they generate an uneven flow of energy; with Saft’s technology the excess energy generated at peak times can be stored and used when needed.
“Thanks to Saft technology and our different in-house developed Energy Storage Systems, applications can run smoothly based on a constant flow of energy solely relying on renewable sources”, Thomas Andersson, Sales Manager for IBG Sweden states.
The high performance batteries can thus withstand outer pressure, and combine the tasks of acting as backup power source while at the same time operating as an effective energy storage system.

Saft developers of world’s largest bridging power system – BESS
Saft has delivered the world’s largest energy storage system in existence today. The system is located in Alaska, where power-cuts are frequent due to a single-source energy flow. In collaboration with Swedish ABB, Saft has installed a system to reduce the number of days that a diesel-based spinning reserve system has to be in operation.
The spinning reserve has previously been running every day, all year round, just in case of a power-cut. By implementing a bridging power solution with the capacity of sustaining an entire city’s power for fifteen minutes, the time it takes to get the diesel system up and running, Saft has created favorable conditions for economic and environmental savings. The solution is an attractive application worldwide, and can be applied in different scenarios depending on the need.
Another interesting market for Saft’s bridging power solution is telecommunications in third world countries and on islands. Here Thomas Andersson explains: “The power supply here is often unreliable, and thus the telecommunications masts are powered by diesel generators. Our technology and proven products could easily save large amounts of diesel as well as maintenance costs, while at the same time making a huge improvement on behalf of the environment”.

Pioneer in recycling
Almost everything that is produced by Saft in Oskarshamn is exported (99 per cent). Saft AB has maintained a strong dedication to environmental issues and the recycling of batteries for 40 years.
As a pioneer in the field, Saft is taking global responsibility for the recycling process of not only their own products, but any industrial battery available on the market today.
“We co-operate with our partners worldwide in order to maintain a high level of service, this includes focusing on the aftermarket and the handling of old batteries regardless of brand”, Mari Kadowaki concludes.
